Les Mis in NY closed:
In a flurry of red, white and blue balloons, streamers and confetti, Broadway bid goodbye Sunday to 'Les Miserables.' It was an emotional final performance for the musical, which closed after more than 16 years and 6,680 performances, second only to 'Cats,' Broadway's longest-running show

If you're looking for the recipe to a sure-fire little-theatre hit, here it is. Find a movie that has a certain cult following, the cultier the better, and then adapt it for the stage. If you can make it a musical, you'll be laughing, because the songs will help underscore the essential absurdity of the phenomenon.
Don't worry too much about slickness or professionalism - your audience will be largely composed of young people who seldom go to the theatre, and never to a musical, and have no standard against which to measure performance. What they seek is authenticity, fidelity to the spirit of the cult. Deliver that, and you're well on your way to establishing a hit

In Defense of Willful Directors - the director's role examined in The New York Times:
Willful directors can either enliven or distort. Enliven, if they accept the gulf between a playwright's time and immediate intentions on the one hand and the sensibilities of today on the other, and set up a critical dialogue between past and present, text and audience. Distort, if they just lay a simple-minded, ideologically monolithic interpretation on a multi-faceted play. The temptation to distort is particularly powerful in a climate that discourages the new, like commercially cautious Broadway or the West End today. Or when the creators, like so many modernist composers, have drifted from the audience. Easier to feed the theatrical and operatic maw by tossing it proven hits, but spicing them up to slake the yearning for novelty.

The article is Canada focused, but seems to apply to Chicago too: 'With virtually every one of our companies - big and small - facing a distressing number of empty seats, it make sense to ask why the under-35s aren't more devoted playgoers. I think it comes down to two things: For most of them, conventional theatre costs too much and means too little. It's not that they hate the art form. Far from it. Brad Winters was murdered: 'The body of Brad Winters, artistic director of the Terrapin Theatre Co. of Chicago, was found Tuesday afternoon in his apartment on the 500 block of West Belden Avenue, police said. Joffrey Ballet Non-Dance Opportunity: 'This October The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago will be performing Romeo & Juliet, choreography by John Cranko music by Serge Prokoviev. We are looking for the following people to perform supernumerary roles in the Ballet:
13 Male Soldiers:
Approximately 6 feet tall, between the ages of 20 and 50.
Must be physically strong and agile.
Must have stage experience & be able to take direction.
Ballet training not necessary, but applicants must be able to count or follow music.
May have facial hair.
5 Women Peasants:
Approximately 5'2" to 5'7" in height, must be over 20 years of age.
Must have stage experience & be able to take direction.
Some basic Dance training requested. Applicants must be able to count or follow music.
5 Men Peasants:
Approximately 5'7" to 6'in height, must be over 20 years of age.
Must have stage experience & be able to take direction.

  • Mission: Members of the IncrediBulls warm up fans during pre-game, challenge fans throughout the game and create high energy and excitement in the stands and on the court. Will also have potential opportunities to travel and perform throughout the country.
