Online Auditioning for Stage More Common
A rite of passage for young actors - waiting in long lines to be seen by Broadway casting directors, clutching head shots with I-hope-I-get-it fervor - has faded, as more producers and directors have abandoned the long-held assumption that they need to be in the room to assess stage presence and other qualities. While some casting directors have looked at audition tapes here and there over the years, the advent of YouTube, Skype, Facebook, Flip cameras and widely available video equipment has recently given technology a greater role in theater casting, providing a foot in the stage door for the technically savvy.
While no breakout theater star has been discovered solely through online auditions, several casting directors said it was only a matter of time.

Steppenwolf's Flash Mob Promotion
Steppenwolf Theatre Company has been doing creative things like a flash mob to promote their new season. They have become very active online with YouTube, Twitter and more. Good to see theatres embrace the internet a little.

Theatre as Internet Downloads
New U.K. company Digital Theater has announced that productions from high-profile Brit legit troupes including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Almeida, Royal Court Theater, English Touring Theater and the Young Vic will now be available as Internet downloads

The whole point about theatre is that it's live. Flesh-and-blood actors are up there on the stage. That’s why you spend big money on tickets and travel. To see the real thing. Everything else is merely moving pictures. But few people see theatre live. Okay, 50m or more have seen Les Misérables. Most shows, though, are lucky to get tens of thousands; some get hundreds. Then they are just memories. This is odd in the age of infinite copies.
Delamere and Tom Shaw, a film, video and live events expert, have taken the theatrical bull by the digital horns. Last night, at midnight, their website went live. It is a theatrical version of iTunes.
On the basis of what I've seen, the results are superb. When I visited Digital Theatre's Soho office, I was glumly expecting the usual deadness of the filmed stage performance. What I got was something quite new. Thanks to the editing and the multiple points of view, you feel inside the piece in a way that compensates for the loss of that flesh-and-blood thing

I've started TheyAct.com to make your actor website for $189, which I think is the lowest price for putting your headshot, resume and reel together for your own site. Steppenwolf Online Video

Virtual and Live Actors on Stage Together
In a theatrical first, actors working in real time from remote locations recently were beamed onto a stage where they performed with live, in the flesh actors for an audience that experienced one seamless, three-dimensional show, according to the University of Central Florida.
The technology could mean future theatergoers might attend plays where one or more actors are working outside the venue, even in a different country or from their own homes.
We are not talking about holograms yet or the kind of imagery that requires funky glasses,UCF professor John Shafer, a member of the cast, told Discovery News.(But) what we have done for this production has indeed pushed the envelope significantly. The production is a small historical step forward on several levels.
This past weekend, Shafer was hooked to a receiving and transmitting broadband-connected computer that can pull as much as 130 megabytes of data in an instant. Although he performed in Florida, his body was "beamed" onto a stage at Bradley University in Illinois, where he performed "with" live actors there, as well as with actors beamed in from the University of Waterloo in Canada.
Both 3-D and 2-D sets consisting of multiple screens and special effects lighting helped to give the impression that all of the actors, remote or not, existed in a single space. To further link the performances, the actual live actors were also sometimes featured on screens. At one point, a virtual actor even appeared to hand a live actor a cigarette(from Discovery Channel News).
